Overview of the medicine
Lotepro (Losartan Potassium) is an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension), reduce the risk of stroke in patients with hypertension and left ventricular hypertrophy, and treat kidney disease in patients with type 2 diabetes and hypertension.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Initial 50 mg once daily, maintenance 25-100 mg once daily.
Elderly
Initial 25 mg once daily, then adjust.
Renal_impairment
No initial dosage adjustment needed for mild to moderate, consider lower dose for severe.
How to Take
Oral, with or without food.
Mechanism of Action
Blocks the binding of angiotensin II to the AT1 receptor, preventing vasoconstriction and aldosterone secretion, thus lowering blood pressure.

6 hours to peak effect.

Fecal (major) and urinary (minor).

Losartan ~2 hours, active metabolite E-3174 ~6-9 hours.

Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Losartan or any component
- Pregnancy (especially 2nd and 3rd trimesters)
- Concomitant use with aliskiren in diabetic patients
Drug Interactions
NSAIDs
May reduce antihypertensive effect and increase risk of renal impairment.
Diuretics
Increased risk of hypotension.
ACE Inhibitors
Increased risk of hyperkalemia, renal dysfunction, and hypotension.
Potassium-sparing diuretics/Potassium supplements
Increased risk of hyperkalemia.
Storage
Store at room temperature (below 30°C), away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms include hypotension, tachycardia; bradycardia could occur. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Contraindicated during pregnancy. Not recommended during breastfeeding due to potential harm to the infant.
