Description
Overview of the medicine
Magalrat-Plus 480 mg Chewable Tablet is a combination medicine containing Magaldrate and Simethicone. It is primarily used for the symptomatic treatment of acidity, heartburn, indigestion, gastritis, and relief from gas, bloating, and abdominal discomfort.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Chew 1 to 2 tablets, 3 to 4 times daily, preferably between meals and at bedtime, or as directed by the physician.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment is generally required, but caution should be exercised in elderly patients with renal impairment.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution in patients with severe renal impairment due to potential accumulation of aluminum and magnesium ions. Consult a physician for appropriate dosing.
How to Take
Tablets should be chewed thoroughly before swallowing. Do not swallow whole. It can be taken with or without water.
Mechanism of Action
Magaldrate, an antacid, works by neutralizing excess stomach acid, thereby reducing heartburn and indigestion. Simethicone, an anti-foaming agent, reduces the surface tension of gas bubbles in the gastrointestinal tract, causing them to coalesce and facilitating their easier expulsion, thus relieving bloating and flatulence.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 5-10 minutes (for acid neutralization)
Excretion
Magaldrate components (Magnesium and Aluminum) are excreted primarily in feces; Simethicone is excreted unchanged in feces.
Half life
Not applicable for Magaldrate (local action); Simethicone not absorbed.
Absorption
Magaldrate is minimally absorbed systemically. Simethicone is not absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract.
Metabolism
Not applicable; primarily local action in GI tract.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to Magaldrate, Simethicone, or any component of the formulation.
- Severe renal impairment (due to risk of magnesium and aluminum accumulation).
Drug Interactions
Digoxin
Reduced absorption of digoxin.
Iron Salts
Reduced absorption of iron.
Thyroid Hormones
Reduced absorption of levothyroxine.
Ketoconazole & Itraconazole
Reduced absorption due to increased gastric pH.
Tetracyclines & Fluoroquinolones
Reduced absorption due to chelation.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place, below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Overdose is rare due to the low systemic absorption. Symptoms may include severe constipation, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and in severe renal impairment, symptoms of hypermagnesemia (muscle weakness, hypotension) or aluminum toxicity (encephalopathy, osteomalacia). Treatment is supportive, including gastric lavage if recent, and management of electrolyte imbalances.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. While generally considered safe, it should be used with caution during pregnancy and lactation only if clearly needed and under medical supervision. Consult your doctor.
