Description
Overview of the medicine
Magalrat-Plus 480 mg Suspension is a combination antacid and antiflatulent used to relieve symptoms of heartburn, indigestion, sour stomach, and gas. It contains Aluminium Hydroxide and Magnesium Hydroxide to neutralize stomach acid, and Simethicone to break down gas bubbles.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
10-20 mL (2-4 teaspoonfuls) four times daily, between meals, at bedtime, or as directed by a physician.
Elderly
Same as adult dose, but caution in patients with renal impairment due to potential for magnesium accumulation.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution; dose adjustment may be necessary. Not recommended for severe renal impairment due to risk of hypermagnesemia.
How to Take
Shake the bottle well before each use. Take orally. It is generally recommended to take antacids between meals and at bedtime for maximum effect.
Mechanism of Action
Aluminium Hydroxide and Magnesium Hydroxide are antacids that react chemically with hydrochloric acid in the stomach to neutralize it, reducing acidity. Magnesium Hydroxide also acts as a laxative. Simethicone is an antiflatulent that reduces surface tension of gas bubbles in the gastrointestinal tract, causing them to coalesce and be more easily expelled.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Rapid (within minutes for acid neutralization)
Excretion
Unabsorbed magnesium and aluminium are excreted in feces. Absorbed magnesium is excreted renally.
Half life
Not applicable for unabsorbed components; absorbed magnesium has a renal elimination half-life.
Absorption
Magnesium Hydroxide and Aluminium Hydroxide are minimally absorbed systemically, though some magnesium ions may be absorbed, especially in renal impairment. Simethicone is not absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract.
Metabolism
Not applicable for unabsorbed components.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to any component of the suspension.
- Severe renal impairment (risk of hypermagnesemia).
- Hypophosphatemia (with prolonged use of aluminium-containing antacids).
Drug Interactions
Bisphosphonates
Reduced absorption. Take bisphosphonates at least 30 minutes before antacids.
Thyroid hormones
May reduce absorption of levothyroxine. Separate administration times.
Iron salts & Digoxin
Reduced absorption when taken concurrently with antacids.
Mycophenolate Mofetil
Reduced absorption, avoid concurrent use.
Tetracyclines & Quinolones
Antacids can decrease the absorption of these antibiotics. Administer at least 2 hours before or 4-6 hours after antacids.
Storage
Store below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include severe diarrhea (magnesium), constipation (aluminium), and electrolyte imbalances. In severe cases of renal impairment, hypermagnesemia can occur, leading to hypotension, nausea, vomiting, central nervous system depression, and cardiac irregularities. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Generally considered safe for occasional use during pregnancy and lactation, but consult a doctor before use. Prolonged high-dose use is not recommended.
