Magnesium Hydroxide acts as an osmotic laxative, drawing water into the intestine. Liquid Paraffin acts as a stool softener and lubricant. Sodium Picosulfate is a stimulant laxative that increases peristalsis.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
2-8 hours (Sodium Picosulfate), 0.5-6 hours (Magnesium Hydroxide)
Excretion
Primarily fecal (unabsorbed portions); renal (minimally absorbed magnesium and picosulfate metabolites).
Half life
Not clinically significant for Magnesium Hydroxide and Liquid Paraffin; Sodium Picosulfate has a short half-life of its active metabolite.
Absorption
Magnesium Hydroxide is poorly absorbed; Liquid Paraffin is minimally absorbed; Sodium Picosulfate is absorbed minimally and activated in the colon.
Metabolism
Magnesium Hydroxide is not metabolized; Liquid Paraffin is not metabolized; Sodium Picosulfate is metabolized by colonic bacteria to its active form.
