Description
Overview of the medicine
Maxidim 1 gm Injection contains Ceftazidime, a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections including severe, respiratory, urinary, skin, and soft tissue infections.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
1-2 gm IV/IM every 8-12 hours, depending on infection severity and susceptibility.
Elderly
Dosage adjustment may be required based on renal function due to age-related decline.
Renal_impairment
Reduced dosage or increased dosing interval based on creatinine clearance (e.g., 1 gm every 12-24 hours for moderate impairment).
How to Take
For intravenous (IV) or intramuscular (IM) use. Reconstitute the powder with sterile water for injection. Administer IV slowly over 3-5 minutes (bolus) or over 20-30 minutes (infusion).
Mechanism of Action
Inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), leading to bactericidal action.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Rapid
Excretion
Primarily excreted unchanged by the kidneys (glomerular filtration).
Half life
Approximately 1.5-2 hours in adults with normal renal function.
Absorption
Rapid and complete absorption after intravenous (IV) or intramuscular (IM) administration.
Metabolism
Minimally metabolized; mainly excreted as unchanged drug.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Known hypersensitivity to ceftazidime or any other cephalosporin antibiotics.
- •History of severe hypersensitivity reaction to any other beta-lactam antibiotic (e.g., penicillins).
Drug Interactions
Aminoglycosides
Increased risk of nephrotoxicity when co-administered, especially in patients with pre-existing renal impairment.
Oral anticoagulants
May potentiate the anticoagulant effect, requiring closer INR monitoring.
Loop diuretics (e.g., furosemide)
May increase the risk of nephrotoxicity when given with aminoglycosides.
Storage
Store unopened vials below 30°C (86°F), protected from light. Reconstituted solution storage depends on diluent and should follow manufacturer's instructions.
Overdose
Management involves supportive care and symptomatic treatment. Hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis may be helpful in removing the drug from the bloodstream in cases of severe overdose or renal impairment.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Studies in animals have not shown harm, but adequate studies in pregnant women are lacking; use only if clearly needed. Excreted in breast milk in small amounts; use with caution during lactation.
