Description
Overview of the medicine
Maxilax 10 gm Powder is an osmotic laxative used for the symptomatic treatment of constipation. It works by increasing water content in the stool, making it softer and easier to pass.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
10-20 gm (1-2 sachets) once daily, dissolved in 125 ml of water. Dosage may be adjusted according to individual response.
Elderly
Same as adult dosage. Initial dose may be 10 gm once daily.
Renal_impairment
No specific dose adjustment is necessary as systemic absorption is negligible.
How to Take
Dissolve the content of one sachet in approximately 125 ml (half a glass) of water. Stir well until the powder is completely dissolved and drink immediately. Best taken in the morning.
Mechanism of Action
Macrogol 3350, the active ingredient in Maxilax, is a long-chain linear polymer that passes through the gut largely unabsorbed. It works by an osmotic action in the gut, causing water to be retained in the faeces. This softens the stool and increases faecal volume, thereby facilitating bowel movements.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Typically 24-48 hours.
Excretion
Excreted largely unchanged in the faeces.
Half life
Not applicable, as it is largely unabsorbed.
Absorption
Macrogol 3350 is poorly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract.
Metabolism
Not metabolized in the body.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to the active substance or to any of the excipients
- Severe inflammatory bowel disease (such as ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease)
- Toxic megacolon
- Bowel obstruction or perforation
- Symptoms of abdominal pain of unknown origin
Drug Interactions
Other oral medications
May potentially decrease the absorption of other orally administered medications if taken simultaneously. It is advisable to take other medicines at least 1 hour before or 1 hour after Maxilax.
Storage
Store below 25°C (77°F) in a dry place. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Overdose may lead to diarrhea, abdominal pain, and vomiting. Excessive loss of fluids due to diarrhea may require correction of electrolyte imbalance. Symptomatic treatment and discontinuation of the drug are recommended.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Maxilax is generally considered safe for use during pregnancy and lactation as systemic absorption is minimal. However, always consult a doctor before use.
