Description
Overview of the medicine
Levosulpiride is an atypical antipsychotic and a prokinetic agent. It is primarily used to treat gastrointestinal motility disorders such as dyspepsia, irritable bowel syndrome, and gastroesophageal reflux disease. It also has a role in managing psychiatric conditions like anxiety, depression, and somatoform disorders due to its modulating effect on dopamine.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
25 mg three times daily before meals, or as directed by physician.
Elderly
Dosage adjustment may be necessary, usually starting with lower doses.
Renal_impairment
Reduced dosage is required based on creatinine clearance.
How to Take
Take orally, preferably 15-30 minutes before meals.
Mechanism of Action
Levosulpiride acts as a selective antagonist of dopamine D2 receptors. In the gastrointestinal tract, this action increases acetylcholine release, enhancing gastric emptying and intestinal transit. In the central nervous system, its D2 antagonism modulates dopaminergic pathways, contributing to its anxiolytic, antidepressant, and mild antipsychotic effects, particularly at lower doses.

Primarily excreted unchanged via the kidneys (urine).
