Description
Overview of the medicine
Melizin is a second-generation antihistamine used to relieve allergy symptoms such as runny nose, sneezing, itchy or watery eyes, and itching.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
10 mg once daily.
Elderly
Start with 5 mg daily, adjust based on renal function. Maximum 10 mg daily.
Renal_impairment
Moderate impairment: 5 mg every other day. Severe impairment: Contraindicated.
How to Take
Melizin tablets should be taken orally, with or without food. It can be taken at any time of day but ideally at the same time each day.
Mechanism of Action
Melizin (Cetirizine) selectively blocks H1 histamine receptors, thereby inhibiting the effects of histamine and reducing allergic reactions.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Approximately 20 to 60 minutes
Excretion
Primarily excreted by the kidneys, with about two-thirds of the dose eliminated in urine.
Half life
Approximately 8 to 12 hours
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. Peak plasma concentrations are achieved within approximately 1 hour.
Metabolism
Limited hepatic metabolism; a significant portion is excreted unchanged.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to cetirizine, hydroxyzine, or any component of the formulation.
- •Severe renal impairment (creatinine clearance less than 10 ml/min).
Drug Interactions
Alcohol
Concurrent use with alcohol or other CNS depressants may lead to additive central nervous system depression.
Theophylline
A small decrease in cetirizine clearance has been reported with concomitant use of theophylline.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include drowsiness, restlessness, and agitation (especially in children). Management is primarily supportive and symptomatic. Gastric lavage and activated charcoal may be considered soon after ingestion.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Studies in animals have not shown harm to the fetus, but there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. Use only if clearly needed. Cetirizine is excreted in human milk; use with caution during lactation.
