Overview of the medicine
Meropenem is a broad-spectrum carbapenem antibiotic used to treat a wide variety of serious bacterial infections, including those resistant to other antibiotics. It is administered intravenously.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
500 mg to 1 g IV every 8 hours, depending on infection severity and type.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment needed unless severe renal impairment.
Renal_impairment
Dose reduction required based on creatinine clearance.
How to Take
Administered intravenously as an infusion over 15-30 minutes or as a bolus injection over 3-5 minutes.
Mechanism of Action
Meropenem is a bactericidal antibiotic that inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs).

Probenecid

Valproic acid
May decrease valproic acid serum concentrations, leading to loss of seizure control.
Storage
Store below 30°C. Protect from light. Do not freeze.
Overdose
In case of overdose, discontinue meropenem and initiate symptomatic and supportive treatment. Hemodialysis can remove meropenem and its metabolite.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use in pregnancy only if the potential benefit outweighs the potential risk to the fetus. Meropenem is excreted in breast milk; use with caution during lactation.
