Mesalamine is an anti-inflammatory drug used to treat inflammatory bowel diseases like ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Oral: 2-4 g daily in divided doses. Rectal: 1 g once daily (suppository/enema).
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment, but monitor renal function.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution; dose adjustment may be necessary in severe impairment.
How to Take
Oral tablets/capsules should be taken with or without food as directed. Rectal forms are for local administration.
Mechanism of Action
Exerts topical anti-inflammatory effect in the colon by inhibiting prostaglandin and leukotriene synthesis.
