Description
Overview of the medicine
Metsina 400 mg Tablet contains Metronidazole, an antibiotic and antiprotozoal medicine used to treat various bacterial and parasitic infections.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
For amoebiasis: 400 mg three times daily for 5-10 days. For giardiasis: 400 mg three times daily for 5-7 days. For anaerobic infections: 400 mg three times daily, duration depends on infection. Always follow physician's advice.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment is generally required, but caution is advised in patients with hepatic impairment.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment necessary for mild to moderate renal impairment. For severe renal impairment, dose reduction may be considered.
How to Take
Take orally with or after food to minimize gastrointestinal upset. Swallow the tablet whole with water, do not chew or crush.
Mechanism of Action
Metronidazole is a nitroimidazole antimicrobial that enters the bacterial or protozoal cell, where it is reduced by electron transport proteins to reactive cytotoxic compounds. These compounds damage DNA and other biomolecules, leading to cell death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Varies by infection type, typically within hours for symptomatic relief.
Excretion
Mainly renal (60-80% as metabolites and unchanged drug), with some fecal excretion (6-15%).
Half life
Approximately 6-12 hours in healthy adults.
Absorption
Rapidly and almost completely absorbed after oral administration. Peak plasma concentrations usually occur within 1-2 hours.
Metabolism
Primarily hepatic, largely by oxidation with side-chain cleavage and glucuronide conjugation. Major metabolite (2-hydroxymethylmetronidazole) also has antibacterial and antiprotozoal activity.
