Description
Overview of the medicine
Micosone 2-1 Ointment is a topical medication combining an antifungal agent (Miconazole Nitrate) and a potent corticosteroid (Betamethasone Valerate). It is used for treating inflammatory skin conditions complicated by fungal infections.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Apply a thin layer to the affected area once or twice daily.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment required.
Renal_impairment
Not applicable for topical use.
How to Take
For external use only. Apply a thin film to cover the affected skin area and gently rub in. Wash hands before and after applying the ointment. Avoid contact with eyes, nose, and mouth. Do not apply under occlusive dressings unless advised by a doctor.
Mechanism of Action
Miconazole Nitrate inhibits the biosynthesis of ergosterol, an essential component of the fungal cell membrane, leading to increased membrane permeability and leakage of cellular contents. Betamethasone Valerate is a potent corticosteroid that suppresses the inflammatory response through various mechanisms, including inhibition of prostaglandin and leukotriene synthesis, leading to reduced redness, swelling, and itching.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Symptomatic relief often within a few days.
Excretion
Miconazole excreted via feces and urine; Betamethasone excreted via urine.
Half life
Not well established for topical application; systemic half-life of miconazole is about 24 hours, betamethasone valerate is 5.6 hours.
Absorption
Minimal systemic absorption when applied topically.
Metabolism
Miconazole is extensively metabolized in the liver; Betamethasone is primarily metabolized in the liver.
