Description
Overview of the medicine
Microgest 100 mg Capsule contains micronized Progesterone, a naturally occurring steroid hormone that plays a key role in the menstrual cycle and maintenance of early pregnancy. It is used in hormone replacement therapy and for various gynecological conditions.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Luteal support: 200-400 mg daily, Secondary amenorrhea: 400 mg daily for 10 days, HRT: 200 mg daily for 12-14 days sequentially or 100 mg daily continuously.
Elderly
Similar to adult dosage, with caution in hepatic/renal impairment.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution; dosage adjustment may be necessary in severe impairment.
How to Take
Oral administration. Take the capsule with water, preferably at bedtime to minimize dizziness/drowsiness. May be taken with food to improve absorption.
Mechanism of Action
Progesterone is a natural progestogen that binds to intracellular progesterone receptors, leading to gene expression changes. It induces secretory changes in the endometrium, maintains pregnancy, and inhibits uterine contractions. It also has anti-estrogenic effects.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Variable; effects on endometrium seen within hours to days.
Excretion
Primarily via urine as metabolites, with some fecal excretion.
Half life
Approximately 5-20 hours (variable due to metabolites).
Absorption
Readily absorbed after oral administration, subject to extensive first-pass metabolism. Absorption can be enhanced by micronization.
Metabolism
Primarily hepatic, extensive first-pass metabolism, forming various metabolites (e.g., pregnanediol, pregnanolone).

- Undiagnosed vaginal bleeding
- Known or suspected breast cancer or other hormone-sensitive cancers
- Active thrombophlebitis or thromboembolic disorders

Drug Interactions
Barbiturates
May reduce the effect of progesterone.
CYP3A4 inhibitors (e.g., Ketoconazole, Erythromycin)
May increase progesterone levels, potentially increasing side effects.
CYP3A4 inducers (e.g., Rifampicin, Carbamazepine, Phenytoin)
May decrease progesterone levels, reducing efficacy.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include drowsiness, dizziness, nausea, and fatigue. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive. No specific antidote.
