Description
Overview of the medicine
Mig-10 mg tablet is primarily used for the acute treatment of migraine attacks with or without aura. It belongs to a class of drugs known as triptans, which work by narrowing blood vessels in the brain and blocking pain signals.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
The usual adult dose is 10 mg taken orally as a single dose. If symptoms return, a second dose may be taken after at least 2 hours, not exceeding 20 mg in 24 hours.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment required for elderly patients, but caution is advised.
Renal_impairment
No dose adjustment is generally required for mild to moderate renal impairment; use with caution in severe impairment.
How to Take
Take the tablet whole with water. It can be taken with or without food. For best results, take as soon as migraine symptoms begin.
Mechanism of Action
Migratriptan (assumed active ingredient) selectively binds to 5-HT1B and 5-HT1D receptors, which are found on cranial blood vessels and nerve endings. This binding causes vasoconstriction of dilated intracranial blood vessels, inhibits the release of neuropeptides, and blocks nociceptive transmission in the trigeminal system, thereby alleviating migraine pain and associated symptoms.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Onset of action typically within 30-60 minutes.
Excretion
Mainly excreted via the kidneys as metabolites and unchanged drug.
Half life
Approximately 2-3 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed after oral administration, peak plasma concentrations reached within 1-2 hours.
Metabolism
Primarily metabolized in the liver by monoamine oxidase (MAO) enzymes.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •History of ischemic heart disease (e.g., angina pectoris, myocardial infarction)
- •Uncontrolled hypertension
- •History of stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA)
- •Severe hepatic impairment
- •Concomitant use with ergotamine-containing medications or other triptans
Drug Interactions
SSRIs/SNRIs
Potential risk of serotonin syndrome (rare but serious). Monitor patients closely.
MAO inhibitors
May decrease Migratriptan clearance, leading to increased exposure. Contraindicated if MAO inhibitor used within 2 weeks.
Ergotamine-containing medicines
Increased risk of vasospasm. Should not be used within 24 hours of each other.
Other 5-HT1 receptor agonists (triptans)
Increased risk of vasospasm and adverse effects. Should not be used within 24 hours of each other.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include severe dizziness, drowsiness, vomiting, and chest tightness. In case of overdose, symptomatic and supportive treatment should be given. Monitor cardiac function for at least 12 hours. There is no specific antidote.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Use only if potential benefit justifies potential risk to the fetus. Caution is advised during lactation as Migratriptan may be excreted in breast milk. Consult a doctor.
