Description

Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Not indicated for adults in this 5 mg chewable tablet form. Adults usually take 10 mg film-coated tablets.
Elderly

How to Take
Take one Montek-5 mg chewable tablet once daily in the evening. The tablet should be chewed thoroughly before swallowing. It can be taken with or without food.
Mechanism of Action
Montelukast selectively blocks the cysteinyl leukotriene 1 (CysLT1) receptor, preventing the binding of leukotrienes, which are inflammatory mediators. This action reduces bronchoconstriction, inflammation, and mucus secretion in the airways, leading to improved asthma control and reduced allergic rhinitis symptoms.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Clinical effects are generally observed within 1 day of initiation of therapy.
Excretion
Excreted almost exclusively in the feces via bile. Renal excretion is negligible.
Half life
Plasma half-life ranges from 2.7 to 5.5 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed after oral administration. Peak plasma concentrations are achieved in approximately 2-4 hours.
Metabolism
Extensively metabolized in the liver by cytochrome P450 enzymes, primarily CYP3A4, CYP2C9, and CYP2C8.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to montelukast or any component of the formulation.
Drug Interactions
Rifampicin
May decrease the plasma concentration of montelukast, potentially reducing its efficacy. Co-administration should be done cautiously.
Phenobarbital
May decrease the area under the plasma concentration-time curve (AUC) of montelukast by approximately 40%, necessitating clinical monitoring.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose include abdominal pain, somnolence, thirst, headache, vomiting, and psychomotor hyperactivity. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive. There is no specific antidote.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed and the potential benefit outweighs the potential risk. Montelukast is excreted into breast milk; caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing mother. Consult a doctor.
