Description
Overview of the medicine
Montenaaf ODT contains Montelukast, a leukotriene receptor antagonist, used for the prophylaxis and chronic treatment of asthma and for the relief of symptoms of seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
10 mg once daily in the evening.
Elderly
No dosage adjustment required.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment required.
How to Take
Place the orally disintegrating tablet on the tongue. It will rapidly dissolve and can be swallowed with or without water. Take once daily in the evening for asthma or allergic rhinitis, or at least 2 hours before exercise for EIB.
Mechanism of Action
Montelukast selectively binds to and inhibits the cysteinyl leukotriene type 1 (CysLT1) receptor. Leukotrienes are potent inflammatory mediators that are released from various cells, including mast cells and eosinophils, and contribute to the pathophysiology of asthma and allergic rhinitis.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 1 day for allergic rhinitis, and sustained improvement for asthma symptoms.
Excretion
Primarily excreted in the feces via bile (approximately 86%), with less than 0.2% excreted in urine.
Half life
Elimination half-life: 2.7 to 5.5 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed after oral administration. Peak plasma concentration reached in 2-4 hours.
Metabolism
Extensively metabolized in the liver by CYP3A4, 2C8, and 2C9 enzymes.

Contraindications

Drug Interactions
Rifampicin
May decrease Montelukast plasma concentrations.
Gemfibrozil
May increase Montelukast plasma concentrations.
Phenobarbital
May decrease Montelukast plasma concentrations.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
In cases of overdose, common adverse reactions include abdominal pain, somnolence, thirst, headache, vomiting, and psychomotor hyperactivity. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed. Montelukast is excreted in breast milk; caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing mother.
