Description
Overview of the medicine
Mupirocin is a topical antibiotic used to treat bacterial skin infections such as impetigo, folliculitis, and furunculosis. It works by stopping the growth of certain bacteria.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Apply a small amount of ointment or cream to the affected area two to three times daily for 5-10 days. For nasal ointment, apply a small amount into each nostril two times daily for 5 days.
Elderly
No dosage adjustment is required for elderly patients.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment is required for patients with renal impairment as systemic absorption is minimal.
How to Take
Wash hands before and after applying the medicine. Apply a thin layer to the affected area. The treated area may be covered with a sterile gauze dressing if desired.
Mechanism of Action
Mupirocin inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by reversibly binding to bacterial isoleucyl-tRNA synthetase, thereby preventing the incorporation of isoleucine into bacterial proteins.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Clinical improvement typically seen within 3-5 days.
Excretion
Excreted renally as monic acid.
Half life
Systemic half-life is short (20-40 minutes) for absorbed drug.
Absorption
Minimal systemic absorption (less than 0.2%) after topical application to intact or damaged skin. Nasal absorption is also very low.
Metabolism
Rapidly metabolized to an inactive metabolite, monic acid, in the skin and systemically.
