Description
Overview of the medicine
Mupiskin Ointment is a topical antibiotic used to treat bacterial skin infections such as impetigo, folliculitis, and furunculosis. It is effective against various Gram-positive bacteria, including Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Apply a small amount to the affected area three times daily for 3-10 days, or as directed by physician.
Elderly
No special dosage adjustment required for topical application.
Renal_impairment
No special dosage adjustment required for topical application due to minimal systemic absorption.
How to Take
For external use only. Wash hands before and after application. Apply a thin layer to cover the affected skin area. The treated area may be covered with a sterile dressing.
Mechanism of Action
Mupirocin inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by reversibly binding to bacterial isoleucyl-tRNA synthetase, an enzyme necessary for the synthesis of bacterial proteins.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Clinical improvement usually seen within 3-5 days.
Excretion
Excreted renally as monic acid.
Half life
Systemic half-life is 20-40 minutes (when absorbed) and is rapidly metabolized.
Absorption
Minimal systemic absorption through intact skin. Absorption may be increased through damaged skin.
Metabolism
Rapidly metabolized to an inactive metabolite, monic acid, in the skin and systemically.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to mupirocin or any component of the formulation
- Not for ophthalmic or intranasal use (except nasal formulation)
- Do not use in extensive burns or open wounds due to potential systemic absorption of polyethylene glycol
Drug Interactions
No significant interactions
No significant systemic drug interactions are expected with topical mupirocin due to its minimal absorption. However, avoid co-administration with other topical products on the same area without medical advice.
Storage
Store below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children. Discard any unused portion after the treatment course is completed.
Overdose
Overdose with topical application is unlikely due to minimal systemic absorption. If accidentally ingested, symptomatic treatment may be required. There is no specific antidote.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Studies in animals have shown no evidence of harm to the fetus. Use in pregnancy only if clearly needed. Excretion into breast milk is unknown, but systemic absorption is minimal, making adverse effects in breastfed infants unlikely.

Doctor Notes
- Advise patients on proper application technique and the importance of completing the full course.
- Monitor for signs of superinfection or lack of clinical response, which may indicate resistant organisms.
- Avoid use in extensive burns or open wounds where systemic absorption of polyethylene glycol may occur.
- Consider nasal mupirocin for S. aureus decolonization where appropriate.
