Description
Overview of the medicine
Myrox 15 mg Syrup contains Ambroxol Hydrochloride, a mucolytic agent used to treat respiratory diseases associated with viscous mucus. It helps to thin and loosen mucus in the airways, making it easier to cough up.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Adults and children over 12 years: 10 ml (30 mg) 3 times daily. The dose may be reduced to 5 ml (15 mg) 3 times daily after 2-3 days. Children 6-12 years: 5 ml (15 mg) 2-3 times daily. Children 2-5 years: 2.5 ml (7.5 mg) 3 times daily.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment is required for elderly patients, but caution is advised in patients with severe renal or hepatic impairment.
Renal_impairment
In severe renal impairment, the dosage frequency should be reduced or the dose should be halved. Consultation with a physician is recommended.
How to Take
Myrox syrup is for oral administration. It can be taken with or without food. Use a measuring cup or spoon provided with the package for accurate dosing.
Mechanism of Action
Ambroxol acts as a mucolytic by depolymerizing mucopolysaccharide fibers and stimulating the production of less viscous mucus. It also enhances ciliary activity and stimulates surfactant production, leading to improved mucociliary clearance.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 30 minutes to 1 hour.
Excretion
Mainly excreted renally (approximately 90% as metabolites, 10% as unchanged drug).
Half life
Approximately 7-12 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly and almost completely absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, with peak plasma concentrations occurring within 1-2.5 hours.
Metabolism
Primarily hepatic metabolism, mostly via conjugation.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to Ambroxol or any component of the formulation.
- •Rare hereditary conditions that may be incompatible with an excipient of the product (e.g., fructose intolerance for syrup containing sorbitol).
Drug Interactions
Antibiotics
Concomitant administration of Ambroxol with antibiotics (e.g., amoxicillin, cefuroxime, erythromycin, doxycycline) leads to higher antibiotic concentrations in the broncho-pulmonary secretions and in the sputum.
Cough suppressants
Should not be used concomitantly with antitussives (cough suppressants) as this may lead to an accumulation of secretions due to the suppressed cough reflex.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, protected from light. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose are generally mild and may include gastrointestinal disturbances like nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Management is primarily symptomatic and supportive. Gastric lavage and forced emesis are not usually indicated.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Ambroxol should only be used during pregnancy, especially during the first trimester, if strictly indicated and after careful risk-benefit assessment by a physician. Ambroxol passes into breast milk, therefore it is not recommended during lactation.
