Description
Overview of the medicine
Mystatin 100,000 units/mL suspension contains Nystatin, an antifungal medication used to treat fungal infections of the mouth, throat, and gastrointestinal tract, primarily caused by Candida species.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Oral candidiasis: 400,000-600,000 units four times daily, swish and swallow. Continue for 48 hours after symptoms disappear.
Elderly
Similar to adult dosage, adjust based on tolerability and clinical response.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment needed due to minimal systemic absorption.
How to Take
Shake well before use. For oral candidiasis, place half of the dose in each side of the mouth and retain for as long as possible before swallowing. For infants and young children, apply with a dropper or swab to affected areas in the mouth.
Mechanism of Action
Nystatin is a polyene antifungal that binds to sterols (primarily ergosterol) in the fungal cell membrane, leading to an alteration in cell permeability and leakage of intracellular components. This results in fungal cell death.

Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Nystatin is poorly absorbed from the GI tract, and adverse effects on the fetus are unlikely. Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed. It is not known whether nystatin is excreted in human milk; use with caution in nursing mothers.
