Description
Overview of the medicine
Nafex 180 mg Tablet contains Fexofenadine Hydrochloride, a non-sedating antihistamine used to relieve allergy symptoms such as sneezing, runny nose, itchy eyes, and hives. It works by blocking histamine, a natural substance that the body produces during an allergic reaction.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
180 mg orally once daily for seasonal allergic rhinitis or chronic idiopathic urticaria.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment is generally required, but caution is advised in patients with renal impairment.
Renal_impairment
Dose adjustment may be necessary for severe renal impairment. Consult a physician.
How to Take
Take orally with water, with or without food. Do not take with fruit juice as it may reduce absorption. Do not exceed the recommended dose.
Mechanism of Action
Fexofenadine is a selective peripheral H1-receptor antagonist. It competitively inhibits the binding of histamine to H1 receptors, thereby preventing the histamine-induced symptoms of allergic reactions. Unlike older antihistamines, it does not readily cross the blood-brain barrier, resulting in minimal to no sedative effects.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 1 hour
Excretion
Primarily excreted unchanged in feces (80%) and urine (12%).
Half life
Approximately 11-15 hours
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed after oral administration. Peak plasma concentrations are reached in approximately 1-3 hours.
Metabolism
Minimally metabolized; about 5% is metabolized in the liver.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to fexofenadine or any component of the formulation.
- Children under 6 years of age for 180mg strength.
Drug Interactions
Erythromycin or Ketoconazole
May increase fexofenadine plasma concentrations. Monitor for increased side effects.
Antacids containing aluminum or magnesium
May decrease the absorption of fexofenadine. Separate administration by approximately 2 hours.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms may include dizziness, drowsiness, and dry mouth. Management is symptomatic and supportive. Gastric lavage and activated charcoal may be considered if recent ingestion. Hemodialysis does not effectively remove fexofenadine.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Use only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Small amounts may pass into breast milk; use with caution in breastfeeding mothers. Consult a doctor.
