Description
Overview of the medicine
Naproxen 250 mg tablet is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used to relieve pain, inflammation, and fever. It is commonly prescribed for conditions like arthritis, menstrual pain, and acute injuries.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
For mild to moderate pain, dysmenorrhea: Initially 500 mg, then 250 mg every 6-8 hours as needed. Maximum initial dose is 1250 mg/day, then 1000 mg/day. For chronic conditions (e.g., arthritis): 250-500 mg twice daily.
Elderly
Use the lowest effective dose for the shortest duration. Monitor for renal and gastrointestinal adverse effects.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution and at reduced doses. Avoid in severe renal impairment (creatinine clearance < 30 mL/min).
How to Take
Take the tablet orally with a full glass of water. It can be taken with food or milk to minimize gastrointestinal upset.
Mechanism of Action
Naproxen inhibits cyclooxygenase (COX-1 and COX-2) enzymes, which are responsible for the synthesis of prostaglandins. Prostaglandins are mediators of pain, inflammation, and fever. By blocking their production, naproxen reduces these symptoms.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Approximately 1 hour for pain relief.
Excretion
Mainly excreted in the urine (95%), as naproxen, 6-O-desmethylnaproxen, or their conjugates.
Half life
12-17 hours.
Absorption
Well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract; peak plasma concentrations occur within 2-4 hours.
Metabolism
Primarily hepatic via demethylation and conjugation.
