Description
Overview of the medicine
Naprotec 500 mg Tablet contains Naproxen, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used to relieve pain, inflammation, and stiffness caused by various conditions such as arthritis, gout, and menstrual cramps. It works by blocking the body's production of certain natural substances that cause inflammation.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Typically 250 mg to 500 mg twice daily. Maximum recommended daily dose is 1000 mg.
Elderly
Lower doses should be considered; careful monitoring for adverse effects is recommended.
Renal_impairment
Dose reduction may be necessary. Not recommended for patients with severe renal impairment (creatinine clearance <30 mL/min).
How to Take
Take orally, preferably with food or milk, to minimize gastrointestinal upset. Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water.
Mechanism of Action
Naproxen inhibits cyclooxygenase (COX-1 and COX-2) enzymes, thereby reducing the synthesis of prostaglandins, which are mediators of inflammation, pain, and fever. This leads to anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and antipyretic effects.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Pain relief typically begins within 1 hour; anti-inflammatory effects may take several days.
Excretion
Primarily excreted in the urine (approximately 95%) as unchanged drug, 6-O-desmethylnaproxen, and their conjugates; a small amount is excreted in feces.
Half life
Approximately 12-17 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly and completely absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract; peak plasma concentrations reached in 2-4 hours.
Metabolism
Extensively metabolized in the liver via demethylation and conjugation to 6-O-desmethylnaproxen and its conjugates.
