Description
Overview of the medicine
Naviscon 250 mg Chewable Tablet is an antacid and reflux suppressant used for the relief of heartburn, indigestion, and acid reflux symptoms. It forms a protective barrier over the stomach contents.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
2-4 tablets after meals and at bedtime, up to 4 times a day.
Elderly
Same as adult dosage.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution, especially with high sodium/calcium content. Consult doctor.
How to Take
The tablet should be chewed thoroughly before swallowing. Do not swallow whole. Take after meals and at bedtime.
Mechanism of Action
Sodium alginate reacts with gastric acid to form a viscous gel (raft) which floats on top of the stomach contents, preventing reflux. Calcium carbonate and sodium bicarbonate provide immediate antacid action by neutralizing stomach acid.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within minutes.
Excretion
Unabsorbed portions are excreted in feces. Absorbed ions are renally excreted.
Half life
Not applicable for alginates (local action). Antacid components have varied systemic half-lives, but their therapeutic effect is local.
Absorption
Alginates are largely unabsorbed. Antacid components (calcium, sodium) are minimally absorbed.
Metabolism
Not significantly metabolized systemically.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients
- •Severe renal impairment (due to sodium/calcium content)
Drug Interactions
Iron supplements
Reduced iron absorption.
Thyroid hormones
Reduced absorption.
Tetracyclines/Quinolones
Reduced absorption of antibiotics.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place below 30°C. Protect from moisture and direct sunlight.
Overdose
Overdose may cause gastrointestinal discomfort (bloating, nausea). In rare cases of excessive intake, especially with high calcium content, milk-alkali syndrome can occur.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Generally considered safe during pregnancy and lactation, but always consult a doctor or pharmacist before use.
