Description
Overview of the medicine
Nebanol Plus Ointment is a combination topical antibiotic used to prevent and treat minor skin infections caused by bacteria, such as those occurring in small cuts, scrapes, and burns. It contains Neomycin Sulfate and Bacitracin Zinc which work together to kill susceptible bacteria.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Clean the affected area. Apply a thin layer of ointment to the affected area 1 to 3 times daily. May be covered with a sterile dressing if needed.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment required. Use as for adults.
Renal_impairment
Topical application results in minimal systemic absorption, so dose adjustment is generally not necessary. However, caution is advised if applied to large open wounds or for prolonged periods due to potential for systemic absorption.
How to Take
For external use only. Wash hands before and after applying the ointment. Do not apply to eyes, nose, or mouth. Avoid applying to large areas of skin or for prolonged periods without medical advice.
Mechanism of Action
Neomycin (an aminoglycoside) inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit. Bacitracin (a polypeptide antibiotic) interferes with bacterial cell wall synthesis by inhibiting dephosphorylation of lipid pyrophosphate. This dual action provides broad-spectrum antibacterial activity.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Local antimicrobial effect begins shortly after application.
Excretion
Systemically absorbed components are primarily excreted renally.
Half life
Not relevant for topical use due to minimal systemic absorption.
Absorption
Minimal systemic absorption through intact skin. Increased absorption may occur through abraded skin, large surface areas, or occlusive dressings.
Metabolism
Systemically absorbed components are primarily excreted unchanged.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Neomycin, Bacitracin, or any other components of the ointment.
- Application to deep or puncture wounds.
- Application to serious burns.
- Application to large areas of the body, particularly if the skin is broken, due to the risk of systemic absorption and potential ototoxicity/nephrotoxicity with neomycin.
Drug Interactions
Systemic aminoglycosides
Though systemic absorption is minimal, theoretical risk of increased ototoxicity/nephrotoxicity if used concurrently with systemic aminoglycosides, especially on compromised skin.
Other topical preparations
Avoid concomitant use of other topical medications on the same area unless advised by a doctor.
Storage
Store in a cool and dry place, below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Overdose from topical application is unlikely due to minimal systemic absorption. In case of accidental ingestion or excessive application on large open wounds, systemic effects of neomycin (e.g., ototoxicity, nephrotoxicity) could theoretically occur. Symptomatic and supportive treatment would be required.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use during pregnancy and lactation only if clearly needed and under medical supervision, especially when applying to large skin areas. Minimal systemic absorption reduces risk, but caution is still advised.

Lab Monitoring
- Not generally required for topical use. For prolonged use on large areas of compromised skin, monitoring for systemic absorption (e.g., kidney function, hearing) may be considered, although this is rare for typical topical application.
Doctor Notes
- Counsel patients on proper application technique and duration of use (typically < 7 days).
- Advise discontinuation and medical consultation if signs of allergic reaction or superinfection occur.
- Caution against use on large areas, deep wounds, or serious burns due to potential for systemic absorption of neomycin and associated ototoxicity/nephrotoxicity.
Patient Guidelines
- Wash your hands thoroughly before and after applying the ointment.
- Clean the affected area gently before applying the medication.
- Apply a thin layer of the ointment to cover the entire affected area.
- Do not use for more than one week unless advised by your doctor.
- Avoid contact with eyes, nose, and mouth. If contact occurs, rinse thoroughly with water.
- Do not cover the treated area with a tight bandage or dressing unless specifically instructed by your doctor, as this may increase absorption.
Missed Dose Advice
If you miss a dose, apply it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your regular dosing schedule. Do not apply extra ointment to make up for a missed dose.
Driving Precautions
Nebanol Plus Ointment is for topical use and is not expected to affect the ability to drive or operate machinery.
Lifestyle Advice
- Maintain good hygiene to prevent further infection.
- Avoid scratching the affected area to prevent spreading infection.
- Wear loose-fitting clothing over treated areas if possible.
