Description
Overview of the medicine
Neovitan 100 mg Tablet contains Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C), a vital nutrient involved in various bodily functions including immune system support, collagen formation, and antioxidant protection.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Typically 50-200 mg daily for deficiency, up to 1 gram for therapeutic use.
Elderly
Same as adult dosage, no specific adjustment needed.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution in severe renal impairment due to risk of oxalate stone formation with high doses.
How to Take
Orally, with or without food. Chewable tablets should be chewed before swallowing.
Mechanism of Action
Ascorbic acid acts as a powerful antioxidant, protecting cells from damage caused by free radicals. It is essential for the synthesis of collagen, a crucial protein for connective tissues, skin, blood vessels, and bones. It also aids in iron absorption and supports immune function.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Effects generally seen within hours to days for nutritional support.
Excretion
Primarily excreted unchanged by the kidneys when plasma levels exceed renal threshold; metabolites are also excreted renally.
Half life
Approximately 16-20 days, depending on body stores and dose.
Absorption
Readily absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract; absorption may decrease with increasing dose. Bioavailability is high at lower doses.
Metabolism
Partially metabolized to inactive compounds, including ascorbic acid-2-sulfate and oxalic acid.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to ascorbic acid
- •Hemochromatosis (due to enhanced iron absorption)
Drug Interactions
Warfarin
May decrease the anticoagulant effect of warfarin at very high doses.
Deferoxamine
May enhance iron toxicity in iron-overload patients when co-administered.
Oral Contraceptives
May slightly decrease plasma Vitamin C levels.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Acute overdose is rare and usually causes gastrointestinal upset (diarrhea, abdominal cramps). Management is supportive and symptomatic.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Generally considered safe at recommended daily allowances. High doses should be avoided unless medically indicated.
