Description
Overview of the medicine
Nitoxin 100 mg Suspension is a broad-spectrum antibiotic used for the treatment of various bacterial infections in children.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Primarily for pediatric use. For children (1-5 years): 5 ml (100 mg) twice daily. Dosage for older children/adults typically requires higher strength formulations.
Elderly
Dosage adjustments may be required based on renal function and overall health status.
Renal_impairment
Dosage adjustment is necessary in patients with renal impairment; consult physician for specific recommendations.
How to Take
Shake the bottle well before each use. Administer orally using the provided calibrated measuring spoon or cup. Can be taken with or without food. Complete the full prescribed course of treatment.
Mechanism of Action
Nitroxacin inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), leading to bacterial lysis and death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
1-2 hours
Excretion
Primarily renal (glomerular filtration and tubular secretion).
Half life
1.5-2.5 hours
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract after oral administration. Peak plasma concentrations reached within 2-4 hours.
Metabolism
Minimal hepatic metabolism; primarily excreted unchanged.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to nitroxacin, other cephalosporins, or any component of the formulation.
- History of severe hypersensitivity reaction to penicillin (due to potential for cross-reactivity).
Drug Interactions
Probenecid
Increases plasma concentrations and prolongs the half-life of nitroxacin by decreasing renal tubular secretion.
Oral anticoagulants
May increase the anticoagulant effect by interfering with vitamin K synthesis or displacement from plasma protein binding.
Antacids containing aluminum or magnesium
May decrease the absorption of nitroxacin if taken simultaneously.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, protected from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep out of reach of children. Do not freeze the reconstituted suspension.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal discomfort, and rarely, central nervous system excitability leading to convulsions. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive. Gastric lavage may be considered in recent ingestions.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Animal reproduction studies have shown no risk to the fetus, but there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed. Nitroxacin is excreted in breast milk in small amounts; use with caution during lactation.
