Overview of the medicine
Drotaverine is an antispasmodic drug primarily used to treat functional disorders and pain caused by smooth muscle spasms. It is effective in relieving various types of abdominal pain and cramps.
Uses & Indications
Dosage

How to Take

Mechanism of Action
Drotaverine acts by inhibiting phosphodiesterase-4 (PDE4), an enzyme specific to smooth muscle cells. This leads to an increase in intracellular cyclic AMP (cAMP) levels, resulting in the relaxation of smooth muscles and alleviation of spasms.
Pharmacokinetics

15-20 minutes orally, faster parenterally.
Excretion
Primarily excreted in urine (about 50%) and feces (about 30%) as metabolites.
Half life
Approximately 9-14 hours.
Absorption
Rapid and complete absorption after oral administration. Peak plasma concentration is reached within 45-60 minutes.
Metabolism
Extensive first-pass metabolism in the liver. Metabolized by O-demethylation.
