Description
Overview of the medicine
Nohist (Fexofenadine) is a non-sedating antihistamine used to relieve symptoms of seasonal allergic rhinitis and chronic idiopathic urticaria.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
For seasonal allergic rhinitis: 60 mg twice daily or 120 mg/180 mg once daily. For chronic idiopathic urticaria: 180 mg once daily.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment is generally required, but caution is advised in elderly patients with impaired renal function.
Renal_impairment
For patients with impaired renal function, a starting dose of 60 mg once daily is recommended.
How to Take
Take orally with water, preferably before a meal. Do not take with fruit juices.
Mechanism of Action
Fexofenadine is a selective peripheral H1-receptor antagonist. It inhibits histamine release and reduces allergic reactions.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Onset of action is approximately 1 hour.
Excretion
Primarily excreted unchanged in the faeces (approximately 80%) and urine (approximately 11%).
Half life
The elimination half-life is approximately 11-15 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed after oral administration, with peak plasma concentrations reached in approximately 2-3 hours.
Metabolism
Undergoes minimal hepatic metabolism (less than 5%).

Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Fexofenadine or any excipients in the formulation.
Drug Interactions
Erythromycin
May increase fexofenadine plasma levels, although clinical significance is minimal.
Ketoconazole
May increase fexofenadine plasma levels, although clinical significance is minimal.
Antacids (containing aluminum and magnesium)
May decrease the absorption of fexofenadine. Separate administration by approximately 2 hours.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose include dizziness, drowsiness, and dry mouth. Management should be symptomatic and supportive.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Use during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. It is not known whether Fexofenadine is excreted in human milk, so caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing mother.
