Description
Overview of the medicine
Norglic is a synthetic progestogen used primarily as an oral contraceptive. It works by preventing ovulation and altering the uterine lining and cervical mucus to make conception difficult.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
For contraception: 0.25 mg once daily, preferably at the same time each day, starting on the first day of menstruation.
Elderly
Not indicated for post-menopausal women; caution with other conditions.
Renal_impairment
No specific dose adjustment required, but use with caution and monitor.
How to Take
Take orally with water, usually at the same time each day without interruption, even during menstruation.
Mechanism of Action
Norglic (Norgestrel) acts by inhibiting the secretion of gonadotropins, thus preventing ovulation. It also thickens the cervical mucus to impede sperm penetration and causes endometrial changes that inhibit implantation.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Contraceptive effect begins after consistent use as directed.
Excretion
Excreted primarily via urine (40-67%) and feces (30-52%) as metabolites.
Half life
The plasma elimination half-life is approximately 11-45 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed after oral administration, with peak plasma concentrations reached within 1-2 hours.
Metabolism
Extensively metabolized in the liver via hydroxylation and reduction, followed by conjugation.
