Description
Overview of the medicine
NOVO ORS is an oral rehydration salt formulation used to restore fluids and electrolytes lost due to dehydration, especially in conditions like diarrhea, cholera, or excessive sweating.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
For mild to moderate dehydration: Drink 1 sachet dissolved in 500 mL of water, as much as desired until dehydration is corrected. For severe dehydration, IV fluids are needed initially.
Elderly
Similar to adults, but monitor for signs of overhydration or electrolyte imbalance, especially if renal function is compromised.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution. Closely monitor serum electrolyte levels. Dosage adjustment may be required.
How to Take
Dissolve the entire contents of one sachet in 500 mL (approximately 2.5 standard glasses) of boiled and cooled drinking water. Stir until completely dissolved. Drink slowly over time.
Mechanism of Action
The glucose in ORS facilitates the absorption of sodium and water in the small intestine, helping to replenish lost fluids and essential electrolytes (sodium, potassium, chloride, citrate).
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Rapid rehydration effects typically begin within minutes of ingestion.
Excretion
Excess electrolytes are primarily excreted via the kidneys; water is excreted through urine and other routes.
Half life
Not applicable in a typical pharmacokinetic sense for electrolyte components; glucose is metabolized.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed orally from the gastrointestinal tract.
Metabolism
Electrolytes are not metabolized; glucose is metabolized to provide energy.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Severe dehydration requiring intravenous fluid therapy
- Unconsciousness or inability to drink
- Intestinal obstruction or paralytic ileus
- Persistent vomiting that prevents retention of oral fluids
Drug Interactions
No significant drug interactions have been reported with standard ORS formulations.
ORS primarily works by replacing fluids and electrolytes, and generally does not interact with other medications.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Overdose is rare with correct preparation and use. Excessive intake, especially with impaired renal function or incorrect preparation, can lead to hypernatremia or hyperkalemia. Management involves discontinuing ORS and correcting electrolyte imbalances.
Pregnancy & Lactation
NOVO ORS is considered safe for use during pregnancy and lactation, as it replaces essential fluids and electrolytes.

WHO Essential Medicine
YesClinical Trials
Oral Rehydration Salt is a well-established and extensively studied therapy. Numerous clinical trials have demonstrated its efficacy and safety in managing dehydration, especially due to acute diarrheal diseases, leading to its adoption as a cornerstone of global public health by WHO and UNICEF.
Lab Monitoring
- In severe cases of dehydration or in patients with renal impairment, monitor serum electrolytes (sodium, potassium) and renal function (creatinine, BUN).
Doctor Notes
- Emphasize the importance of correct preparation with boiled and cooled water.
- Educate patients on recognizing signs of severe dehydration requiring hospitalisation (e.g., lethargy, inability to drink, persistent vomiting).
- Encourage continued feeding for children during diarrhea, alongside ORS therapy.
Patient Guidelines
- Always use boiled and cooled drinking water for preparation.
- Measure the water precisely (500 mL per sachet).
- Discard any unused solution after 12-24 hours.
- Do not add sugar or any other substances to the ORS solution.
- For infants and young children, feed the solution slowly with a spoon or dropper.
Missed Dose Advice
NOVO ORS is typically taken as needed for rehydration, not on a fixed schedule. Therefore, the concept of a missed dose does not apply. Continue to take as required.
Driving Precautions
NOVO ORS is not known to affect the ability to drive or operate machinery.
Lifestyle Advice
- Continue normal feeding (especially for children) alongside ORS therapy.
- Maintain good hygiene practices to prevent further infections leading to dehydration.
