Description
Overview of the medicine
Novonil 10 mg Tablet contains Norethisterone, a synthetic progestin hormone. It is primarily used for managing various menstrual disorders, endometriosis, and as a component in hormone replacement therapy. It can also be used to delay periods.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Dosage varies greatly depending on the indication. For dysfunctional uterine bleeding: 5-10 mg daily for 10 days. For delaying periods: 5 mg three times daily starting 3 days before expected period. For endometriosis: 10 mg daily for 6-9 months.
Elderly
Caution is advised; lower doses may be necessary. Use under medical supervision.
Renal_impairment
No specific dose adjustment guidelines; use with caution.
How to Take
Take orally with water. Can be taken with or without food. Follow the physician's instructions regarding dose and duration strictly.
Mechanism of Action
Norethisterone acts similarly to natural progesterone, primarily by transforming the proliferative endometrium into a secretory endometrium. It suppresses ovulation, thickens cervical mucus, and thins the endometrial lining, depending on the dosage and indication.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Effects on endometrium typically begin within hours to days.
Excretion
Mainly via urine (50-70%) and feces (30-40%) as metabolites.
Half life
Approximately 5-13 hours.
Absorption
Well absorbed orally, with peak plasma concentrations occurring within 1-2 hours.
Metabolism
Extensively metabolized in the liver, primarily by reduction and hydroxylation, followed by sulfation and glucuronidation.
