Description
Overview of the medicine
Odofex (Fexofenadine) is a non-drowsy antihistamine used to relieve allergy symptoms such as sneezing, runny nose, itchy watery eyes, and itchy nose or throat. It is also used to treat chronic idiopathic urticaria (hives).
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
For seasonal allergic rhinitis, 60 mg twice daily or 120 mg or 180 mg once daily. For chronic idiopathic urticaria, 60 mg twice daily or 180 mg once daily.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment generally required, but caution with renal impairment.
Renal_impairment
For severe renal impairment, initial dose of 60 mg once daily is recommended.
How to Take
Taken orally with water, preferably before a meal. Do not take with fruit juice.
Mechanism of Action
Fexofenadine is a selective peripheral H1-blocker. It inhibits histamine release from mast cells and reduces the effects of histamine on H1 receptors, thereby alleviating allergy symptoms.

Onset
Onset of action within 1 hour.
Excretion
Primarily excreted unchanged in the feces (80%) and urine (11%).
Half life
Approximately 11-15 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed after oral administration; peak plasma concentrations reached in 2-3 hours.
Metabolism
Minimally metabolized (less than 5%) in the liver.

Drug Interactions
Erythromycin and Ketoconazole
May increase fexofenadine plasma concentrations. Clinical significance usually minimal.
Antacids containing aluminum or magnesium
May decrease fexofenadine absorption. Separate administration by at least 2 hours.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Overdose symptoms may include dizziness, drowsiness, and dry mouth. Management is supportive and symptomatic; hemodialysis is ineffective.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed and the potential benefits outweigh the potential risks. Excreted in breast milk, so caution is advised in nursing mothers.
