Description
Overview of the medicine
Omecron 20 mg Capsule is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) used to reduce the amount of acid produced in the stomach. It is commonly prescribed for conditions like heartburn, acid reflux, ulcers, and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Typically 20-40 mg once daily for 4-8 weeks, depending on the condition. For maintenance, 20 mg once daily.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment is generally required, but caution is advised with severe hepatic impairment.
Renal_impairment
No dose adjustment needed for renal impairment.
How to Take
Take the capsule whole with water, preferably in the morning before a meal. Do not chew or crush.
Mechanism of Action
Omeprazole works by irreversibly binding to and inhibiting the H+/K+-ATPase proton pump in the gastric parietal cells, thereby blocking the final step of acid production.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 1 hour; full effect within 2-4 days of continuous therapy.
Excretion
Mainly excreted in urine as metabolites, with a smaller amount excreted in feces.
Half life
Approximately 0.5 to 1 hour, but the acid suppressive effect lasts much longer due to irreversible binding to the proton pump.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, though absorption may be delayed by food. Bioavailability is approximately 30-40% but increases with repeated dosing due to reduced first-pass metabolism.
Metabolism
Extensively metabolized in the liver, primarily by CYP2C19 and CYP3A4 enzymes.

- •Concomitant use with nelfinavir.
