Overview of the medicine
Opdex (Omeprazole) is a proton pump inhibitor used to reduce the amount of acid produced in the stomach. It is commonly used to treat conditions such as heartburn, acid reflux, and stomach ulcers.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
GERD: 20-40 mg once daily for 4-8 weeks. Ulcers: 20-40 mg once daily for 4-8 weeks. Zollinger-Ellison: 60 mg once daily, adjusted as needed.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment typically required, but caution in patients with hepatic impairment.
Renal_impairment
No dose adjustment necessary for renal impairment.
How to Take
Take orally, preferably in the morning before a meal. Swallow capsules whole; do not chew or crush.
Mechanism of Action
Omeprazole inhibits the H+/K+-ATPase (proton pump) in gastric parietal cells, thereby blocking the final step in acid production.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 1 hour, maximal effect within 2 hours
Excretion
Mainly excreted in urine (approximately 80%) and feces (approximately 20%) as metabolites.
Half life
0.5-1 hour (terminal half-life)
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed after oral administration, bioavailability is about 30-40% due to first-pass metabolism.
Metabolism
Extensively metabolized in the liver, primarily by CYP2C19 and CYP3A4.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to omeprazole or other benzimidazoles
- Concomitant use with nelfinavir

Warfarin
Increased INR/bleeding risk.
Nelfinavir
Significant reduction in nelfinavir exposure.
Clopidogrel
Reduced antiplatelet effect of clopidogrel.
Methotrexate
Increased methotrexate levels.

Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms include nausea, vomiting, dizziness, abdominal pain, diarrhea, headache. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive.

Category C in pregnancy. Use only if potential benefit outweighs risk. Excreted in breast milk; caution advised.
