Description
Overview of the medicine
Opsomycetin is an ophthalmic preparation containing Chloramphenicol, a broad-spectrum antibiotic used to treat various bacterial eye infections such as conjunctivitis and keratitis.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Eye drops: 1-2 drops into the affected eye(s) every 3-6 hours, or more frequently in severe cases. Eye ointment: Apply a small amount (about 1 cm strip) into the conjunctival sac 3-4 times daily.
Elderly
Same as adults, dose adjustment generally not needed.
Renal_impairment
No specific dosage adjustment required for topical ophthalmic use as systemic absorption is minimal.
How to Take
For ophthalmic use only. Wash hands thoroughly before and after application. Avoid touching the dropper/tube tip to the eye or any other surface to prevent contamination. Close the eye gently after application.
Mechanism of Action
Chloramphenicol inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit, thereby preventing peptide bond formation. It is primarily bacteriostatic.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Rapid local effect, typically within minutes of application.
Excretion
Mainly renal excretion of metabolites for systemically absorbed drug. Topically applied drug is largely eliminated via tears.
Half life
Systemic half-life is 1.5-4.1 hours, but not highly relevant for topical use due to minimal systemic absorption.
Absorption
Minimal systemic absorption following topical ophthalmic administration, concentrating its effect locally in the eye.
Metabolism
Primarily hepatic metabolism for systemically absorbed drug, however, local metabolism in ocular tissues is limited.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to Chloramphenicol or any component of the formulation.
- •History of bone marrow depression (especially with systemic use) or blood dyscrasias.
- •Family history of aplastic anemia.
Drug Interactions
Systemic chloramphenicol
Topical ophthalmic use has minimal systemic absorption, so interactions with systemic drugs are generally not expected.
Other topical ophthalmic medications
If other eye medications are used, separate administration by at least 5-10 minutes to avoid interference.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place, below 25-30°C. Protect from light. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Overdose with topical ophthalmic chloramphenicol is unlikely. If an excessive amount is accidentally applied, simply rinse the eye(s) with lukewarm water.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use during pregnancy and lactation only if clearly needed and potential benefits outweigh risks. Consult a doctor. Minimal systemic absorption suggests low risk, but caution is advised.
