Description
Overview of the medicine
Opsophenicol 1% Eye Ointment is an ophthalmic antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections of the eye, such as bacterial conjunctivitis and keratitis. It belongs to the fluoroquinolone class of antibiotics.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Apply a small amount (approximately 1 cm strip) into the conjunctival sac of the affected eye(s) 2-3 times daily for 7-10 days, or as directed by a physician. Continue for at least 48 hours after signs and symptoms of infection resolve.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment is required for elderly patients. The dosage is the same as for adults.
Renal_impairment
Not applicable, as systemic absorption is minimal and renal excretion is not a primary elimination route for topical ocular application.
How to Take
For external ophthalmic use only. Gently pull down the lower eyelid to form a small pocket. Apply a thin strip of ointment (about 1 cm) into the pocket. Close the eye gently for 1-2 minutes. Avoid touching the tip of the tube to the eye or any other surface to prevent contamination. Wash hands thoroughly before and after application.
Mechanism of Action
Opsophenicol exerts its bactericidal effect by inhibiting bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, enzymes essential for bacterial DNA replication, transcription, repair, and recombination. This leads to disruption of bacterial DNA and cell death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Therapeutic concentrations in ocular tissues are achieved rapidly, typically within 1-2 hours of application. Clinical improvement may be observed within 24-48 hours.
Excretion
The majority of the applied dose is cleared from the ocular surface through tear drainage. Any minimally absorbed drug is excreted via renal and/or hepatic routes.
Half life
Due to minimal systemic absorption, a systemic half-life is not clinically relevant or accurately determined for topical ophthalmic use. The drug primarily acts locally.
Absorption
Minimal systemic absorption occurs following topical ocular administration, limiting systemic exposure and associated risks. High concentrations are achieved locally in ocular tissues.
Metabolism
Systemic metabolism is negligible due to very low systemic absorption. Any absorbed drug is likely metabolized via typical hepatic pathways.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Known hypersensitivity to opsophenicol, other fluoroquinolones, or any component of the formulation.
- •Viral and fungal infections of the eye (unless specifically co-treated).
Drug Interactions
Other Ophthalmic Preparations
If using multiple topical ophthalmic medications, administer them at least 5 minutes apart. Apply the ointment last.
Storage
Store below 25°C. Do not freeze. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
An overdose with topical ocular application is unlikely. In case of accidental ingestion, seek medical advice, although systemic toxicity is expected to be low due to poor absorption.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use in pregnancy only if the potential benefit outweighs the potential risk to the fetus. Consult a doctor. Caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing mother, although systemic exposure is minimal.
