Description
Overview of the medicine
Optaphenicol 0.5% Eye Drop is an ophthalmic antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections of the eye, such as conjunctivitis, blepharitis, and other superficial ocular infections caused by susceptible organisms.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Instill 1-2 drops into the affected eye(s) every 2-4 hours, or more frequently if required, for 3-5 days. Reduce frequency as infection improves.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment required for elderly patients, same as adults.
Renal_impairment
No specific dosage adjustment required as systemic absorption is minimal.
How to Take
Wash hands thoroughly before use. Tilt head back, pull down the lower eyelid to form a pocket, and instill the prescribed number of drops without touching the eye with the dropper tip. Close eyes gently for a minute. Do not rinse the dropper.
Mechanism of Action
Chloramphenicol acts by reversibly binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit of susceptible bacteria, thereby inhibiting protein synthesis and bacterial growth. It is primarily bacteriostatic.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within hours of administration, clinical improvement typically seen within 1-2 days.
Excretion
Mainly local metabolism and excretion; very little systemically excreted.
Half life
Not well characterized for ocular use due to minimal systemic absorption; estimated short local half-life.
Absorption
Poorly absorbed systemically from ocular administration. Local absorption into ocular tissues occurs.
Metabolism
Minimal systemic metabolism after ocular administration; primarily local effect.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to chloramphenicol or any component of the formulation
- History of bone marrow depression (even if topical, caution is advised)
- Porphyria
Drug Interactions
Not significant for ophthalmic use
Systemic absorption is minimal, therefore clinically significant drug interactions are unlikely with topical ophthalmic use.
Storage
Store below 25°C. Do not freeze. Protect from light. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Ocular overdose is unlikely to cause systemic toxicity due to minimal absorption. If irritation occurs, flush the eye with clean water.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use during pregnancy and lactation only if clearly needed and the potential benefits outweigh the potential risks. Consult a doctor. Minimal systemic absorption is expected.
