Description
Overview of the medicine
Oralyte is an Oral Rehydration Salt (ORS) formulation designed to replenish fluids and electrolytes lost due to dehydration, primarily caused by diarrhea, vomiting, or excessive sweating. It adheres to the World Health Organization (WHO) recommended formula for low osmolarity ORS.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
As per severity of dehydration. Typically, 1-2 liters over 4-6 hours initially, then 100-200 ml after each loose stool or episode of vomiting. Continue as long as dehydration persists.
Elderly
Same as adults, with careful monitoring.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution in severe renal impairment; consult a doctor.
How to Take
Dissolve the contents of one sachet in 1 liter of clean drinking water. Do not boil the solution. Drink small sips frequently. Administer orally.
Mechanism of Action
Oralyte works by facilitating the co-transport of glucose and sodium across the intestinal wall into the bloodstream. This process helps the body absorb water and other electrolytes, effectively rehydrating the individual and restoring electrolyte balance.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within minutes to hours of administration.
Excretion
Excess water and electrolytes are excreted via kidneys.
Half life
Not applicable in the conventional sense, as it's a replenishment solution.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract.
Metabolism
Not metabolized in the conventional sense; components are utilized or excreted.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Intestinal obstruction
- Paralytic ileus
- Severe vomiting preventing oral intake
- Glucose malabsorption
- Kidney failure (anuria or severe oliguria)
Drug Interactions
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place below 30°C, away from direct sunlight. Keep out of reach of children. Prepared solution should be used within 24 hours and discarded thereafter.
Overdose
Over-consumption in individuals with normal renal function is unlikely to cause severe adverse effects. In severe renal impairment, it could lead to electrolyte imbalances (hypernatremia, hyperkalemia) or fluid overload. Management involves discontinuation and symptomatic treatment, sometimes dialysis.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Safe to use during pregnancy and lactation for rehydration.

Lab Monitoring
- Electrolyte levels (in severe cases or impaired renal function)
Doctor Notes
- Emphasize proper mixing instructions to patients.
- Monitor for signs of worsening dehydration or electrolyte imbalance, especially in vulnerable populations.
- ORS is a life-saving intervention for diarrheal diseases.
Patient Guidelines
- Always mix with the recommended amount of clean drinking water.
- Do not add sugar or other substances to the solution.
- Drink small sips frequently, especially after each loose stool or vomit.
- Do not store prepared solution for more than 24 hours.
- Seek medical attention if dehydration worsens or symptoms persist.
Missed Dose Advice
ORS is administered as needed for rehydration. There isn't a 'missed dose' in the traditional sense. Continue to administer as indicated to prevent or treat dehydration.
Driving Precautions
None specific. Oralyte does not impair ability to drive or operate machinery.
Lifestyle Advice
- Maintain good hygiene to prevent recurrent diarrheal episodes.
- Continue eating appropriate food when able.
- Breastfeed infants frequently during diarrheal episodes.
