Description
Overview of the medicine
Oscoral D is a combination supplement containing Calcium Carbonate and Vitamin D3. It is primarily used to prevent and treat calcium and vitamin D deficiencies, support bone health, and manage conditions like osteoporosis, osteomalacia, and rickets.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Typically 1-2 tablets daily, or as directed by physician.
Elderly
Same as adults, with careful monitoring of renal function and serum calcium levels.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution. Dosage adjustment may be required. Monitor serum calcium and phosphate levels regularly.
How to Take
Oral, preferably with food or immediately after a meal to enhance absorption and reduce gastric upset.
Mechanism of Action
Calcium carbonate provides elemental calcium essential for bone formation and maintenance. Vitamin D3 (Cholecalciferol) facilitates the absorption of calcium from the gut, helps regulate calcium and phosphate levels in the body, and promotes bone mineralization.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Therapeutic effects on bone health may take weeks to months.
Excretion
Calcium is primarily excreted via feces, with a smaller amount excreted renally. Vitamin D and its metabolites are mainly excreted in bile and feces.
Half life
Vitamin D3 has a half-life of approximately 15-20 days. Its active metabolites have longer half-lives.
Absorption
Calcium carbonate is absorbed in the small intestine, primarily through active transport. Vitamin D3 is absorbed in the small intestine, mainly in the jejunum, and requires bile salts for optimal absorption. Bioavailability varies.
Metabolism
Vitamin D3 is hydroxylated in the liver to 25-hydroxyvitamin D (calcifediol) and then in the kidneys to 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D (calcitriol), the active form.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypercalcemia (high blood calcium levels)
- •Hypervitaminosis D (excess vitamin D)
- •Severe renal impairment
- •Known hypersensitivity to calcium carbonate or Vitamin D3
Drug Interactions
Digoxin
Increased risk of cardiac arrhythmias if hypercalcemia occurs.
Thiazide diuretics
May increase risk of hypercalcemia.
Bisphosphonates and levothyroxine
Reduced absorption. Administer at least 2-3 hours apart.
Tetracycline and quinolone antibiotics
Reduced absorption of antibiotics if taken concomitantly. Administer at least 2-3 hours apart.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose include hypercalcemia (nausea, vomiting, constipation, abdominal pain, muscle weakness, excessive thirst, confusion) and hypervitaminosis D. Treatment involves discontinuing the supplement, hydration, and medical management of hypercalcemia.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Generally considered safe and often recommended during pregnancy and lactation to meet increased calcium and vitamin D requirements. However, always consult a healthcare provider before use.
