Description
Overview of the medicine
Oxigel-5 Topical Gel contains Benzoyl Peroxide 5% w/w, an effective medication used for the treatment of mild to moderate acne vulgaris. It works by killing bacteria that cause acne and by helping the skin shed dead cells, which can reduce blockages in pores.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Apply a thin layer to affected skin areas once or twice daily after cleansing. Start with once daily application and increase to twice daily if tolerated.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment required; use with caution for sensitive skin.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment required.
How to Take
For topical use only. Cleanse the affected area thoroughly before application. Apply a thin layer of gel to the entire affected area, not just individual spots. Wash hands thoroughly after application. Avoid contact with eyes, lips, and mucous membranes. May bleach hair or colored fabrics.
Mechanism of Action
Benzoyl peroxide acts as an oxidizing agent and has potent bactericidal activity against Propionibacterium acnes (now Cutibacterium acnes), the bacteria primarily implicated in acne. It also has a mild keratolytic effect, which helps to unclog pores and reduce comedone formation. Its anti-inflammatory properties further contribute to reducing acne lesions.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Effects may be seen within 3 weeks, full effects in 8-12 weeks.
Excretion
Benzoic acid is excreted in the urine as benzoate.
Half life
Not applicable systemically due to limited absorption; benzoic acid has a short half-life.
Absorption
Limited systemic absorption after topical application; primarily converted to benzoic acid in the skin.
Metabolism
Metabolized to benzoic acid in the skin.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to benzoyl peroxide or any component of the formulation
Drug Interactions
Tretinoin, Tazarotene, Adapalene
Concomitant use with retinoids may increase irritation; apply at different times of the day (e.g., benzoyl peroxide in the morning, retinoid at night).
Sulfone preparations (e.g., dapsone)
May cause temporary yellow/orange discoloration of the skin and facial hair.
Storage
Store below 30°C. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children. Protect from light.
Overdose
Topical overdose is unlikely to cause systemic toxicity due to limited absorption. Excessive application may result in severe irritation, redness, burning, and peeling. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive; discontinue use and apply cool compresses or emollients to soothe the skin.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Use during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Consult a doctor. Limited systemic absorption suggests low risk during lactation; however, avoid applying to the breast area to prevent infant exposure.
