Description
Overview of the medicine
Oxycaine is an oral suspension containing Oxetacaine (a local anesthetic) along with Aluminium Hydroxide and Magnesium Hydroxide (antacids). It is used for symptomatic relief of pain, heartburn, and discomfort associated with acid-related disorders of the gastrointestinal tract.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
1-2 teaspoonfuls (5-10 mL) 3-4 times daily, preferably 15 minutes before meals and at bedtime. Do not exceed 8 teaspoonfuls in 24 hours.
Elderly
Same as adults, but caution should be exercised due to potential renal impairment and other comorbidities.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution. Prolonged use or high doses may lead to accumulation of aluminium and magnesium, especially in severe renal impairment. Consultation with a physician is recommended.
How to Take
Shake the bottle well before use. Take orally, preferably 15 minutes before meals and at bedtime for optimal relief.
Mechanism of Action
Oxetacaine provides local anesthetic action on the irritated gastrointestinal mucosa, thereby reducing pain. Aluminium Hydroxide and Magnesium Hydroxide act as antacids, neutralizing excessive gastric acid and providing relief from heartburn and acidity.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Rapid onset, within minutes for both local anesthetic and antacid effects.
Excretion
Unabsorbed antacids are excreted in feces. Minimal absorbed ions are excreted renally.
Half life
Not well defined for local action. Systemic absorption of Oxetacaine is minimal; half-life for absorbed components is short.
Absorption
Oxetacaine is poorly absorbed systemically, primarily acting locally. Aluminium and Magnesium hydroxides are minimally absorbed; absorbed ions are mainly excreted renally.
Metabolism
Systemically absorbed Oxetacaine is metabolized in the liver. Antacids undergo chemical reactions in the stomach.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Oxetacaine, Aluminium Hydroxide, Magnesium Hydroxide, or any other component of the formulation.
- Severe renal impairment.
- Patients with low phosphate levels (hypophosphatemia) due to aluminium content.
Drug Interactions
Warfarin
Antacids may enhance the anticoagulant effect of warfarin. Monitor INR closely.
Digoxin & Iron Salts
Absorption of digoxin and iron salts may be decreased. Administer at least 2 hours apart.
Tetracyclines & Quinolones
Antacids may reduce the absorption of certain antibiotics like tetracyclines and quinolones. Administer these medications at least 2-4 hours apart.
Storage
Store below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include severe constipation or diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, or stomach cramps. Management is symptomatic and supportive, including gastric lavage or activated charcoal if ingestion was recent, and monitoring of electrolytes.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use with caution during pregnancy and lactation. Consult your doctor before using this medicine if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.

Clinical Trials
Clinical trials generally support the efficacy of oxetacaine in providing local anesthetic relief and the antacid components in neutralizing gastric acid for symptomatic treatment of GI discomfort. Specific trials for this exact combination under the brand 'Oxycaine' may vary by manufacturer.
Lab Monitoring
- Routine monitoring is generally not required for short-term use. For prolonged use, especially in patients with renal impairment, serum phosphate, calcium, and magnesium levels may need to be monitored.
Doctor Notes
- Advise patients on lifestyle modifications to help manage acid reflux symptoms.
- Caution patients about potential drug interactions, especially with antibiotics and iron supplements.
- Emphasize not to use for prolonged periods without medical review, particularly in elderly or renally impaired patients.
Patient Guidelines
- Always shake the bottle well before taking each dose.
- Do not exceed the recommended dosage without consulting your doctor.
- Inform your doctor about all other medications you are taking, especially antibiotics or iron supplements.
- If symptoms persist for more than 7 days, consult a doctor.
Missed Dose Advice
If a dose is missed, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your regular dosing schedule. Do not double the dose.
Driving Precautions
Oxycaine generally does not affect the ability to drive or operate machinery. However, if you experience dizziness, avoid such activities.
Lifestyle Advice
- Avoid spicy, fatty, and acidic foods that can trigger indigestion or heartburn.
- Limit alcohol and caffeine intake.
- Avoid smoking, as it can worsen acid reflux.
- Eat smaller, more frequent meals instead of large ones.
