Description
Overview of the medicine
Pneumovax 23 is a vaccine used to help prevent pneumococcal disease, which is caused by the bacterium *Streptococcus pneumoniae*. It provides active immunity against 23 serotypes of the bacteria.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
A single 0.5 mL dose.
Elderly
A single 0.5 mL dose (same as adults).
Renal_impairment
No specific dose adjustment is required for renal impairment, but caution should be exercised in severely immunocompromised individuals.
How to Take
Administered as a single 0.5 mL dose intramuscularly (IM) or subcutaneously (SC). The preferred site for IM injection is the deltoid muscle. Do not inject intravenously.
Mechanism of Action
Pneumovax 23 works by stimulating the immune system to produce antibodies against the capsular polysaccharides of 23 specific serotypes of *Streptococcus pneumoniae*. These antibodies help protect against infection by these bacteria.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Immune response (antibody production) typically begins within 2-3 weeks post-vaccination.
Excretion
Not applicable; vaccine components are processed by the immune system and do not undergo traditional excretion pathways.
Half life
Not directly applicable to vaccine antigens; refers to antibody persistence which can last for several years.
Absorption
Vaccines are administered to induce an immune response, not for systemic absorption like drugs. The antigens are processed at the injection site and by immune cells.
Metabolism
Antigens are processed by immune cells, not metabolized in the traditional drug sense.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Known hypersensitivity to any component of the vaccine, or a severe allergic reaction to a previous dose of any pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine.
- •Acute febrile illness or active infection; vaccination should be postponed until recovery.
Drug Interactions
0
Immunosuppressive therapies (e.g., corticosteroids, chemotherapy, radiation therapy) may reduce the immune response to the vaccine.
1
Concurrent use with other vaccines: Pneumovax 23 can generally be administered simultaneously with other vaccines (e.g., influenza vaccine) at different injection sites.
Storage
Store refrigerated between 2°C to 8°C (36°F to 46°F). Do not freeze. Discard if frozen. Protect from light.
Overdose
Overdose is unlikely with a single-dose vaccine. In case of accidental administration of a higher dose, monitor for increased local or systemic reactions and manage symptoms as appropriate.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Use only if clearly needed and potential benefits outweigh risks. Consult physician. It is not known whether this vaccine is excreted in human milk; caution should be exercised when administering to a nursing mother.
