Description
Overview of the medicine
Polycef 250 mg capsule contains Cefixime, a broad-spectrum antibiotic used to treat a variety of bacterial infections.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
The usual adult dose is 200 mg to 400 mg daily, given as a single dose or in two divided doses. For 250 mg capsule, it is typically one capsule twice daily or as directed by the physician.
Elderly
Similar to adult dosage; however, renal function should be assessed, and dosage adjusted if necessary.
Renal_impairment
Dosage adjustment is necessary for patients with severe renal impairment (creatinine clearance < 30 mL/min). A dose of 200 mg once daily or 100 mg twice daily is often recommended.
How to Take
Take the capsule orally with a glass of water, with or without food. It is important to complete the full course of treatment as prescribed by your doctor.
Mechanism of Action
Cefixime works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, which leads to the death of the bacteria.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Rapid, with peak plasma concentrations typically achieved within 2-6 hours after oral administration.
Excretion
Primarily excreted unchanged in the urine (about 50%) and bile.
Half life
Plasma elimination half-life is approximately 3-4 hours.
Absorption
Approximately 40-50% orally absorbed. Food slightly prolongs Tmax but does not significantly affect the extent of absorption.
Metabolism
Cefixime is not extensively metabolized in the body. Some minor hepatic metabolism may occur.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to cefixime or any other cephalosporin antibiotics.
- History of severe hypersensitivity reaction to penicillin or other beta-lactam antibiotics.
Drug Interactions
Warfarin
May increase the anticoagulant effect of warfarin, requiring monitoring of INR.
Probenecid
May increase cefixime blood levels by decreasing renal excretion.
Carbamazepine
Increased plasma levels of carbamazepine have been reported.
Oral Contraceptives
May reduce the effectiveness of oral contraceptives.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
In case of overdose, gastric lavage may be indicated. Cefixime is not removed in significant quantities by hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis. Treatment should be symptomatic and supportive.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Studies in animals have shown no evidence of harm to the fetus, but there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed. Cefixime is excreted in small amounts in breast milk; caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing mother.
