Description
Overview of the medicine
Polygel is a combination antacid and anti-flatulent medication used to relieve symptoms of heartburn, indigestion, and gas. It typically contains Aluminum Hydroxide, Magnesium Hydroxide, and Simethicone.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
10-20 ml or 1-2 tablets, 4 times daily, or as directed by physician. Take 20 minutes to 1 hour after meals and at bedtime.
Elderly
Same as adult dosage, but caution with renal impairment.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution in severe renal impairment due to potential for magnesium accumulation.
How to Take
For suspension, shake bottle well before use. Take after meals and at bedtime. Chewable tablets should be thoroughly chewed before swallowing.
Mechanism of Action
Aluminum and Magnesium Hydroxides neutralize stomach acid, reducing heartburn and indigestion. Simethicone reduces surface tension of gas bubbles in the GI tract, causing them to coalesce and be easily expelled.

Absorption

Side Effects
Contraindications

Drug Interactions
Digoxin
May decrease digoxin absorption.
Iron salts
May reduce iron absorption. Separate administration by 2-3 hours.
Tetracyclines
May decrease absorption of tetracyclines. Separate administration by 2-3 hours.
Fluoroquinolones
May decrease absorption of fluoroquinolones. Separate administration by 2-3 hours.
Thyroid hormones
May decrease absorption of levothyroxine.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Overdose is rare. Symptoms may include diarrhea, abdominal pain, nausea. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Generally considered safe for occasional use during pregnancy and lactation, but consult a doctor before use.
