Overview of the medicine
Preofloxin is a broad-spectrum fluoroquinolone antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections. It works by inhibiting bacterial DNA synthesis.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
250-500 mg orally twice daily, depending on infection severity, for 7-14 days.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment typically required, but monitor renal function.

Dose adjustment required for creatinine clearance < 50 mL/min. Consult prescribing information.
How to Take
Oral suspension should be shaken well before use. Can be taken with or without food. Avoid taking with dairy products or mineral supplements.
Mechanism of Action
Preofloxin inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, enzymes essential for DNA replication, transcription, repair, and recombination. This leads to bacterial cell death.

Side Effects
Contraindications

Drug Interactions
NSAIDs
May increase the risk of CNS stimulation and convulsive seizures.
Warfarin
May enhance the anticoagulant effect, increasing risk of bleeding. Monitor INR.
Corticosteroids
Increased risk of tendinitis and tendon rupture.
Antacids/Mineral supplements
Reduced absorption of preofloxin. Take preofloxin at least 2 hours before or 6 hours after these products.
Storage
Store at room temperature (below 30°C). Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptomatic and supportive treatment. Gastric lavage or activated charcoal may be considered shortly after ingestion. Maintain adequate hydration.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Use only if potential benefit outweighs potential risk to the fetus. Not recommended during lactation as it is excreted in breast milk.
