Description
Overview of the medicine
Albuterol sulfate chewable tablets are a bronchodilator used to prevent and treat bronchospasm in patients 6 years of age and older with reversible obstructive airway disease.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
For adults and children 12 years and older: 4 mg (or 5 mg chewable tablet if available) three or four times daily as needed. Maximum 32 mg/day.
Elderly
Similar to adult dosage, but caution with cardiovascular conditions. Start with a lower dose.
Renal_impairment
No specific dose adjustment generally needed, but monitor for adverse effects due to potential accumulation.
How to Take
Chew thoroughly before swallowing. May be taken with or without food.
Mechanism of Action
Albuterol selectively stimulates beta2-adrenergic receptors in the lungs, leading to relaxation of bronchial smooth muscles, resulting in bronchodilation.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Oral bronchodilation usually occurs within 30 minutes, with peak effect within 2-3 hours.
Excretion
Primarily excreted in the urine as the unchanged drug and its metabolite.
Half life
Approximately 3.8 to 5 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed from the GI tract after oral administration. Peak plasma concentrations are reached within 2-3 hours.
Metabolism
Primarily metabolized in the liver to an inactive sulfate conjugate.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to albuterol or any component of the formulation.
- Severe milk protein allergy (for some formulations)
Drug Interactions
Diuretics
May lead to ECG changes and hypokalemia (especially with high doses).
MAOIs/TCAs
May potentiate the vascular effects of albuterol, increasing risk of cardiovascular adverse effects.
Beta-blockers
May block the bronchodilatory effect of albuterol and produce severe bronchospasm.
Storage
Store at room temperature (20°C to 25°C), away from moisture, light, and excessive heat. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose include tachycardia, tremors, palpitations, nausea, dizziness, fatigue, malaise, and hypokalemia. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Use only if the potential benefit outweighs the potential risk to the fetus. It is unknown if albuterol is excreted in human milk; use with caution in nursing mothers.
