Description
Overview of the medicine
Probet is a topical corticosteroid containing Betamethasone Valerate, used for treating various inflammatory skin conditions.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Apply a thin film to the affected skin area once or twice daily. Do not use for more than 2-4 weeks without medical review.
Elderly
Use with caution, considering increased skin fragility and potential for systemic absorption.
Renal_impairment
No specific dosage adjustment required for topical application.
How to Take
For external use only. Apply a thin layer to the affected area and rub in gently. Wash hands after application.
Mechanism of Action
Betamethasone Valerate acts as an anti-inflammatory and vasoconstrictive agent. It induces phospholipase A2 inhibitory proteins, lipocortins, which control the biosynthesis of potent mediators of inflammation such as prostaglandins and leukotrienes.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Relief of symptoms can be observed within a few days of starting treatment.
Excretion
Mainly through the kidneys, with some biliary excretion.
Half life
Not well-defined for topical use due to low systemic absorption and local action, but absorbed corticosteroid is metabolized by the liver.
Absorption
Systemic absorption varies depending on the integrity of the skin barrier, the vehicle, and the use of occlusive dressings. Absorption is higher in areas with thin skin (e.g., face, scrotum) or damaged skin.
Metabolism
Primarily in the liver.
