Description
Overview of the medicine
Procet 5 mg syrup is an antihistamine medication containing Cetirizine Hydrochloride. It is primarily used to relieve symptoms of allergic conditions such as hay fever, chronic urticaria, and allergic rhinitis. It works by blocking the action of histamine, a natural substance in the body that causes allergic symptoms.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
10 mg (10 ml) once daily or 5 mg (5 ml) twice daily.
Elderly
Dosage adjustment may be required in elderly patients with impaired renal function. Usually, 5 mg (5 ml) once daily.
Renal_impairment
Dose adjustment needed. e.g., CrCl 31-50 ml/min, 5 mg (5 ml) once daily; CrCl 11-30 ml/min, 5 mg (5 ml) every other day.
How to Take
Oral administration. Can be taken with or without food.
Mechanism of Action
Cetirizine is a potent and selective peripheral H1-receptor antagonist. It inhibits the histamine-mediated early phase of allergic reaction and also reduces the migration of inflammatory cells and the release of mediators associated with the late phase of the allergic reaction.
Pharmacokinetics

Within 20-60 minutes.
Excretion
Primarily excreted unchanged in urine.
Half life
Approximately 8-11 hours (adults); may be longer in children and elderly.

Metabolism
Minor hepatic metabolism (approximately 10%).

- Patients with severe renal impairment (creatinine clearance less than 10 ml/min).
- Children under 6 months of age.
Drug Interactions
Ritonavir
Increased plasma cetirizine levels have been reported.
Theophylline
A small decrease in cetirizine clearance has been observed, but dose adjustment is not usually necessary.
Central Nervous System (CNS) depressants
May enhance CNS depression.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms: Somnolence, tachycardia, tremor, headache, urinary retention. Management: Symptomatic and supportive treatment. No specific antidote. Gastric lavage and activated charcoal may be considered if ingestion is recent.
