Misoprostol inhibits gastric acid secretion, stimulates mucosal bicarbonate and mucus production, and enhances mucosal blood flow, thereby protecting the gastric mucosa. It binds to prostaglandin receptors on myometrial cells, leading to myometrial contractions and cervical ripening.
